Tampa: The Buccaneers had a solid season, clinching the NFC South in 2023. They even took down the Eagles in their playoff opener before falling to the Lions, 31-23, in Detroit.
Last Sunday, they snagged another division title by beating the Saints. Now, they’re gearing up to face the Commanders in their playoff opener. If they win, they won’t have to see the Lions again, but there’s still chatter about what’s different this year.
Baker Mayfield, the team’s quarterback, pointed out what he thinks sets this season apart. He said, “The biggest difference is the run game.” He believes that when the team needs to run the ball to win, they’ve been able to do it effectively.
He added that it’s all about having a physical mentality and everyone being on the same page. Late in games, when it’s time to run the clock out, they’ve shown they can do that. While the passing game is connecting well, he insists the run game is the real game-changer.
Last year, the Bucs struggled, finishing last in rushing yards and averaging a mere 3.4 yards per carry. But this year, with the addition of running back Bucky Irving, they’ve turned things around and are now third in the league for yards per carry. They’ve outrushed their last eight opponents and went 6-2 in those games. If they can keep that momentum against Washington, it could bode well for their playoff run.
