Thirsk: A tragic incident unfolded on the A19, where PC Rosie Prior and Ryan Welford lost their lives after being hit by a heavy goods vehicle. This happened on a Saturday morning, just before 9 am.

The police are now looking into a crash that occurred just ten minutes earlier between an Audi and a Ford Focus. This earlier accident is what led PC Prior to stop and assist.

Sadly, both Rosie and Ryan, who was 41, were pronounced dead at the scene. Another individual is currently in the hospital but is stable.

The HGV driver, a 65-year-old from Berwick-upon-Tweed, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but has since been released while investigations continue.

North Yorkshire Police are urging anyone with dashcam footage or information about the earlier crash to come forward. They want to piece together what happened.

DI Jill Cowling from the Major Collision Investigation Team expressed her condolences to the families of Rosie and Ryan, emphasizing the importance of any information, no matter how small.

The families of both victims have shared heartfelt tributes. PC Prior’s family described her as a loving mother and wife, while Ryan’s family remembered him as a hardworking and devoted father.

Local officials, including the mayor, expressed their devastation over the loss, highlighting Rosie’s dedication to public service, even while off duty.
