B.C. Woman Charged with Manslaughter After Infant’s Death
A woman previously banned from midwifery faces charges after an infant she helped deliver died shortly after birth in B.C.

Ladysmith: So, there’s this pretty shocking story coming out of British Columbia. A 77-year-old woman named Gloria Lemay, who claims to be a childbirth advocate, has been charged with manslaughter. This comes after an infant she helped deliver sadly died just days after birth.
According to the RCMP, the baby was unresponsive when it was born on December 27, 2023, at a private home. Despite emergency workers trying to save the little one, the infant passed away on January 6, 2024.
Police believe that Lemay’s involvement in the delivery may have caused the child’s injuries and eventual death. She’s been arrested, but details are pretty scarce since the case is now in the courts.
Interestingly, the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives had already warned the public about Lemay a year ago. They pointed out that she was never registered as a midwife and shouldn’t be practicing in the province at all.
The investigation has involved several agencies, including the provincial Ministry of Children and Family Development and the coroners service. It’s a tough situation all around, and it’s definitely raised a lot of eyebrows in the community.
