Italy: A tragic avalanche struck a group of skiers today in the northern Piedmont region. Sadly, three skiers lost their lives, while two others were injured.
The avalanche hit around midday on the eastern face of Punta Valgrande, which sits on the border with Switzerland. The three victims were swept downhill for several hundred meters, suffering severe injuries. Thankfully, the two survivors were airlifted to a hospital.
Authorities had already issued warnings about the risk of avalanches in the area, especially above 6,900 feet. Eyewitnesses described the avalanche as a violent force that swept people off the slopes.
The Alpine rescue team quickly arrived to assist the survivors, but their current condition remains unclear. They are receiving treatment for their injuries.
This area of the Lepontine Alps is known for its high avalanche risk, and rescuers believe that tough weather conditions may have played a role in this disaster. Officials are urging everyone to stay cautious and avoid risky areas in the mountains.
Just last month, a similar tragedy occurred at a ski resort in Turkey, where a rising judo star lost his life in an avalanche. Emre Yazgan was skiing at the Palandoken Ski Center when disaster struck.
Local news footage captured the frantic search for survivors after that avalanche. The local governor expressed his condolences, noting that despite all efforts, Yazgan could not be saved.
The ski season at Palandöken had just begun, and conditions were initially described as perfect before the tragedy unfolded.
