Canberra: Australia has just voted for a ceasefire in Gaza and to support a Palestinian aid agency that Israel is trying to shut down. This decision comes after the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly backed a permanent ceasefire and humanitarian aid delivery.
The vote was pretty one-sided, with 158 countries in favor and only nine against. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is dire, with over 44,000 lives lost, including more than 13,000 children. It’s heartbreaking.
Most of the 2.1 million people in Gaza have lost their homes and are struggling to find food, water, and medical supplies. The situation is critical, and aid is desperately needed.
Australia is also backing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, which is crucial for delivering aid. Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized that this agency is the only one capable of providing the necessary assistance in Gaza.
However, Israel’s ambassador to the UN claims that the agency has been infiltrated by Hamas, which the agency denies. It’s a complicated situation, and the focus should be on helping those in need.
