NSW: As more Aussies hit the trails, it turns out nearly half of us wouldn’t know what to do if we got lost. But there’s a simple fix, according to survival expert Mike Atkinson, also known as Outback Mike. He suggests packing a personal locator beacon (PLB) in your bag.
These handy devices connect to a satellite that’s always watching over Australia. If you get into trouble and activate it, help can be on the way in just a few hours. They’re small, waterproof, and even float, making them super practical.
Mike’s advice comes after a tough month for hikers, with several incidents making headlines. One notable case was 23-year-old Hadi Nazari, who survived 13 days lost in the NSW Snowy Mountains. His story had everyone on edge until he was found safe.
Outback Mike is definitely taking a PLB on his next adventure. It’s a lifesaver, as shown by sailor Luke Williams, who fell overboard during the Sydney to Hobart race. He activated his beacon and was rescued after drifting away from his yacht.
PLBs are pretty affordable, usually costing a few hundred dollars, and some places even let you borrow them for free, especially in national parks.
Research shows many Aussies lack basic survival skills, which can be crucial in emergencies. Mike suggests planning your route and letting someone know where you’re headed. It’s all about being prepared.
When you’re out hiking, make sure to carry enough water and matches. You never know when you might need them. Bright clothing can also help you stand out in case you need to be found.
If you do get lost and don’t have a PLB, try to stay put instead of wandering off. Finding water is key, and rescuers will likely look for you near water sources. Remember, you need about four liters a day, depending on the conditions.
And if you can, create a signal to help rescuers find you. Piling up green leaves and lighting them can create a thick smoke that’s visible from above.
Stay safe out there, and don’t forget to pack that PLB!
