Sydney: Transport authorities in New South Wales are giving a friendly nudge to drivers about a roundabout rule that many seem to forget. They’re saying it’s not just a myth that you should give way to vehicles already in the roundabout, no matter where they’re coming from.
NSW Road Safety made it clear that the rule is to yield to any vehicle already in the roundabout, whether they’re on your right, left, or directly across from you. It’s a simple rule, but it looks like a lot of folks are still getting it wrong.
Some drivers chimed in, saying this rule is often ignored. One driver pointed out that cars zoom into roundabouts at high speeds, making it tough for others to enter safely, even if they have the right of way.
Another person mentioned that many drivers seem to think they can just speed in and honk their horns instead of yielding. It’s clear there’s some confusion out there.
One suggestion was to put speed bumps at roundabouts to help remind drivers to slow down and give way. NSW Road Safety emphasized that being aware of all vehicles in the roundabout is key to avoiding accidents.
Getting this roundabout rule wrong can lead to fines and demerit points. For instance, not indicating properly can cost you $194 and two demerit points. And if you fail to give way when entering, you could face a $349 fine and three demerit points.
In 2024, NSW saw 340 road fatalities, which is the same as the previous year. That’s about 4.01 deaths per 100,000 people, a slight drop from 4.08 in 2023.
During the holiday season, NSW Police were busy, conducting over 438,000 breath tests and charging 720 people for drink driving. They also issued nearly 10,000 speeding tickets and recorded over 1,700 positive drug tests.
