Kota Kinabalu: An Aussie scientist and local researchers made a cool find in the Malaysian mountains. They discovered a rare plant that’s critically endangered.
Dr. Alastair Robinson, who works at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, teamed up with Malaysian botanists to identify this giant, red-haired carnivorous plant. They named it nepenthes pongoides because it looks a lot like an orangutan with its bright orange hair.
This plant is super rare and was previously unknown. It’s part of the Nepenthes family, which includes those fascinating carnivorous plants that trap insects in their pitcher-like leaves.
What makes this discovery even more special is where they found it—deep in a remote area of the Malaysian mountains. Although it was first photographed back in 2004, it wasn’t recognized as a new species until now.
Robinson mentioned that there might be only about 39 of these plants left. He told Yahoo News Australia, “It’s incredible that species like this are still being discovered in this day and age.” He emphasized how important it is to invest in plant science, especially with so many species facing extinction.
The plant’s prey leaves behind hard shells that don’t break down, creating a gruesome record of its meals. Robinson pointed out that this discovery adds to our understanding of biodiversity in the region and shows how crucial conservation efforts are.
As more species are found, it’s clear that this area is a biodiversity hotspot, possibly home to many other rare plants waiting to be discovered. Understanding how this plant adapts to its environment could teach us a lot about plant resilience.
Robinson hopes that by raising awareness about this unique species, it will lead to better protection measures, like allowing the legal collection of seeds for cultivation.
