Melbourne: An Aussie family had a wild surprise on Christmas Day. They noticed something moving under their child’s bouncer, and it turned out to be a tiger snake!
Reptile catcher Mark Pelley got the call just after 11:30 PM. He rushed over to the family’s home in South Morang. “I lifted the baby bouncer and found the snake right there,” he shared with Yahoo News Australia.
Mark mentioned that the snake could have been lurking around for a while, possibly even crawling among the baby’s toys. “What a Christmas surprise!” he chuckled.
In Australia, tiger snakes are no joke. There have been four recorded deaths from their bites. Mark explained that this species is the fifth most venomous snake in the world, and even though they look small, they can be incredibly dangerous.
These snakes are known for hiding in unexpected places. Scott Smith, another snake catcher, noted that they often stay out of sight, making them hard to encounter. “They just want to be left alone,” he said.
While tiger snakes account for about 17% of snake bites in Australia, the actual number of fatalities is low. It’s a reminder to always be cautious, especially during the festive season!
