Aussie beach turns red as incredible ‘tidal wave’ takes over

Christmas Island: You won’t believe what happened on Christmas Eve! A massive wave of baby red crabs took over the beach, making it look like a scene from a movie.

These little guys were everywhere, crawling from the ocean to the rainforest. It was like the sand vanished under millions of tiny crabs, all on a mission to find safety.

Brendan Tiernan from the national park mentioned that this year’s migration was even bigger than usual. Over the last decade, the crab population has exploded from 50 million to 180 million!

Each baby crab is just about five millimeters wide, and they take around nine days to reach the trees where they’ll hide for the first three years of their lives.

This migration is the final act of a cycle that started months ago when female crabs released their eggs into the ocean. It’s been happening more frequently since 2014, thanks to successful breeding.

Visitors can catch this amazing sight at beaches like Ethel and Greta, where walkways have been built to help the crabs cross safely. It’s a real testament to nature’s wonders!
