This beautiful spot on the Sunshine Coast is a favorite for both tourists and turtles. It’s where green and loggerhead turtles come to lay their eggs, and now those eggs are hatching.
Jan Waters from Cooloola Coast Turtle Care is asking everyone to keep their cars off the sand at night. If you must drive, do it two hours before or after low tide. This way, you can avoid leaving deep ruts that could trap the tiny hatchlings.
Those little guys face enough challenges as they make their way to the sea. If they get stuck in a rut, they might not make it. It’s heartbreaking to think about, especially since only about one in a thousand hatchlings survive to adulthood.
She’s really hoping that 4WD drivers will help out by being more careful. The hatchlings usually come out when the temperature drops, typically between 6 PM and 10 PM, and they all emerge at once.
If you’re lucky enough to see them, try to clear a path over any deep tracks. Just remember, don’t touch them and turn off any lights. Even your phone’s light can confuse them.
Recently, there was a wild incident where a driver sped past other vehicles while towing a jet ski. They ended up bogged down in the soft sand, which just shows how risky it can be to drive recklessly on the beach.
Police have noticed a worrying trend of drivers ignoring road rules on the beach, leading to many penalties for speeding and other offenses. This reckless driving not only puts people at risk but also threatens the turtles that nest in the area.
Teewah Beach is crucial for the survival of these endangered turtles, and with more 4WD activity, there’s growing concern about their safety. Jan emphasized that it’s not just bad for the wildlife but also harms the environment.
