Los Angeles: Australia is stepping up to offer help as wildfires wreak havoc in California. Emergency Management Minister Jenny McAllister said they’re ready to do whatever they can to assist.

Even though no formal request has come in yet, McAllister mentioned that they’ve reached out through diplomatic channels. She emphasized that Australia is always there for its friends in the US.

She pointed out that if the US Federal Emergency Management Agency needs help, they’ll coordinate with Australia’s National Emergency Management Agency. Then, states and territories will be asked to pitch in with resources.

McAllister also highlighted the strong history of cooperation between the two countries, recalling how the US helped Australia during the Black Summer fires by sending aircraft and personnel.

Sadly, the current fires have already claimed seven lives and destroyed nearly 10,000 structures. It’s being called the costliest blaze in US history, with losses potentially exceeding $20 billion.

These fires could also impact Australia’s upcoming fire season since they rely on leasing agreements with the US and Canada for firefighting resources.

McAllister mentioned that while they’re looking into the best ways to manage their firefighting fleet, the government has committed $96 million to boost aerial firefighting resources through 2025-26.

She stressed the importance of cooperation in managing fire seasons, noting that scientists have warned that such extreme weather events will become more common.

From Perth, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged the significant impact of these unseasonal fires and how they might affect the US’s ability to assist Australia in the future.

He reminded everyone that climate change is a real issue, and both countries have historically exchanged resources to tackle these challenges together.
