Consumer watchdogs are sounding the alarm. Mike Keil, CEO of the Consumer Council for Water, says these hikes will add pressure on customers. Two companies, United Utilities and South West Water, are increasing shareholder dividends while customers deal with rising rates.
In the North West, United Utilities will raise bills by 23%, adding £112 to the average bill. South West Water’s increase is even steeper at 32%, or £166, bringing the average to £686. Thames Water is also raising its bills by 30%, adding £151.
Southern Water is proposing a massive 47% hike, which means an extra £224, pushing the average bill to £703. Ofwat has approved these price increases for the next five years, but many are feeling the strain.
According to Water UK, the average household water bill in England and Wales will rise by 26%, or £123, starting April 1. Your bill may vary based on whether you have a water meter and how much water you use.
Water companies argue these hikes are necessary for service improvements and environmental efforts. However, the Consumer Council for Water is worried about the impact on customers. Their studies show that 44% of people have cut back on essentials to manage bills.
