Protestors in Perth’s CBD rallied against nuclear power during an inquiry, voicing concerns over the future of energy in Australia.

Members of Nuclear Free WA and other community groups gathered to share their views. Liam Lilly, the convener, said this protest was a chance for those who couldn’t attend the inquiry to speak out.
Earlier this year, some protestors were blocked from entering a similar inquiry in Collie, where a nuclear power station was proposed. So, this rally in Perth was a big deal for them.
Liam pointed out that the way the inquiry was handled showed a lack of democratic values. He believes the proponents are trying to silence opposition. He firmly stated that WA doesn’t need nuclear power when there are better renewable options available.
He also raised concerns about the long-lasting waste from nuclear energy, which can remain radioactive for thousands of years. Unfortunately, he mentioned that the Coalition is pushing for nuclear energy despite these worries.
Liam argued that while Australia considers nuclear energy, the climate crisis will only worsen. He feels this push is just a way for the Coalition to keep the fossil fuel industry alive.
The Coalition claims that nuclear power is a cheaper and cleaner energy source. However, many people disagree. In a joint statement, leaders from the Coalition said their energy mix, including nuclear, would help Australia reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
They believe this plan avoids unnecessary development on pristine land. But Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen countered that Australia needs affordable power now, not in 20 years. He warned that relying on nuclear could lead to power shortages and expensive blackouts.
