The Arts Council England has put an export bar on it, giving local galleries or institutions a chance to buy it. This panel is considered a national treasure, and experts believe it could shed light on the artistic and political ties between two powerful kingdoms in 7th-century England.
The Pocklington District Heritage Trust is eager to acquire the panel for a museum they’re planning at Burnby Hall. They’re hoping to raise funds and have already started a GoFundMe campaign. The chairman, Phil Gilbank, mentioned how rare such artefacts are in East Yorkshire and how many have been lost to overseas collectors.
Tim Pestell, a member of the Arts Council reviewing committee, emphasized the panel’s significance. He noted that it reflects the wealth and artistry of the time, with intricate designs similar to those found in famous collections like Sutton Hoo.
As of now, the trust has raised £1,480 towards the panel’s £4,000 value. The decision on whether it can be exported will be made by March 2025, giving the community time to rally support and potentially bring this treasure home. If you want to help, check out their crowdfunding page!
