Bristol: So, it turns out Bristol Waste has really dropped the ball lately. They missed a ton of bin collections last month, and folks are not happy about it. Apparently, staff sickness and vehicle breakdowns are to blame, but that’s not cutting it for the residents.
North Bristol is taking the brunt of it, with 250 streets in Clifton alone missing collections in December. The council says they’re working on fixing things, like adding new recycling crews and even planning to keep the recycling depot open 24/7. Sounds like they’re trying to get their act together, but it’s been a rough ride for everyone.
Lib Dem group leader Cllr Jos Clark spoke up at a council meeting, saying trust has really taken a hit between the residents and the council. She mentioned that every councillor has been bombarded with complaints about missed collections, especially over the holidays.
She said, “This situation is unacceptable. For many, this is the only regular interaction they have with the council.” It’s frustrating when you put your bins out, hoping they’ll get picked up, only to find they’re still sitting there days later.
People are even saying it feels like a conspiracy, like the council is changing the collection schedule without telling anyone. Cllr John Goulandris chimed in, saying the general vibe is that Bristol Waste isn’t being managed well.
On the bright side, Cllr Martin Fodor, who’s in charge of environment and sustainability, assured everyone that improving the service is a top priority. He mentioned that they’re working on a new recycling facility that should help speed things up for the crews.
He also noted that there were a lot of sicknesses and breakdowns in December, but things are looking up now. They’re keeping a close eye on performance and trying to make sure missed collections are sorted out within 24 hours.
There’s a planning application coming up to extend the recycling hours at the Albert Road depot, which has faced some objections. Fingers crossed they can get it sorted soon!
