PA: Andy Malkinson is feeling pretty relieved these days. He just heard that Helen Pitcher, the chair of the miscarriages of justice review body, has resigned. After spending 17 long years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, he’s finally feeling vindicated.

Malkinson has been vocal about how Pitcher was criticized for the way the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) handled his case. He mentioned that while she claims to be a scapegoat, he believes she’s finally being held accountable for her actions.

He shared his thoughts on BBC Radio 4, saying, “I was made a scapegoat, she has been made accountable, and I feel vindicated.” It’s a big deal for him, especially after the Justice Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, decided to recommend her removal to the King.

This all started after a harsh independent report revealed how poorly the CCRC managed Malkinson’s pleas for help. Even when he was behind bars, they rejected his claims of innocence twice, with the second rejection happening after Pitcher took over in 2018. It’s a tough situation, but Malkinson is finally seeing some justice come his way.
