Ambulances Blocked by Cars at Welsh Hospitals Create Urgent Concerns
Ambulance bays at Welsh hospitals are being misused, causing delays for emergency services and risking patient safety

Bangor: It’s a bit of a mess at the hospitals in Wales right now. Ambulance bays are being used as parking spots by staff and visitors, which is really causing headaches for the ambulance crews. A worker from the ambulance service shared that cars are often blocking these bays, making it tough for them to do their jobs. Even though these bays aren’t for emergency ambulances, they’re still crucial for patient transfers.
There’s a photo that shows just how bad it is at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor, but it’s not just there. Similar problems are popping up at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd in Bodelwyddan and Wrexham Maelor Hospital too. The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has said that this misuse can really mess with healthcare operations and their ability to help patients. They’re urging everyone to follow the parking rules.
A frustrated healthcare worker, who wanted to stay anonymous, said getting to those bays is a real struggle. They mentioned that both staff and visitors are blocking the way, and they’ve complained to the health board and the Welsh Ambulance Service about it. They just want to make sure patients can get through safely, but it’s becoming a real challenge.
It’s the same story every night, and now it’s happening during the day too. The worker said it’s getting harder to find parking near the entrances at Bangor, Glan Clwyd, and Wrexham. Even reaching the ambulance bays is tough because of all the cars parked on the approach road.
Dr. Sree Andole, the interim executive medical director at BCUHB, stressed that these bays are meant only for ambulances. He pointed out that keeping these areas clear is vital for patient safety and efficient service. He also mentioned that while these bays aren’t for emergency ambulances, it’s still not okay for regular parking.
Dr. Andole added that everyone needs to be responsible, especially when it comes to allowing access for emergency vehicles. They’re working closely with the Welsh Ambulance Service to tackle these issues and are encouraging staff and visitors to think about using other transport options when they can. They really want everyone to stick to the parking guidelines, especially around emergency routes and ambulance parking.
It’s a tough situation, and the Welsh Ambulance Service is letting the health board take the lead on sorting it out.
