Newport: An elderly woman and her dog were out for a walk when a car hit them. This happened in the Malpas area on a Monday morning. The woman is now in the hospital.
Police have been on the scene all day, trying to figure out what happened. The people in the car took off, and officers are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Emergency services got the call about the crash around 6:35 AM. A local resident, Saul Evans, heard a loud crash and rushed outside. He saw the woman and her dog trapped under the car.
Saul said he heard the car speeding before the crash. He called for neighbors to help, and two nurses from a nearby nursing home came to assist. They had to wait for the fire service to lift the car off the woman and her dog.
Police and emergency teams arrived quickly, including the Welsh Ambulance Service and the fire department. A crane was even used to help with the rescue.
According to the police, the collision involved a silver Volkswagen Passat. The woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but thankfully, she is now in stable condition.
There’s also concern for the dog, who was trapped as well. The good news is that the dog is at a vet and receiving treatment, but details on its injuries haven’t been shared yet.
Gwent Police are still investigating and are asking anyone with information, especially if they have video footage, to reach out to them.
