Edinburgh: It’s a real bummer this New Year’s Eve. Heavy rain and strong winds are causing chaos all over the UK, and many celebrations are getting the axe.
Most of the country is under some kind of weather warning from the Met Office. We’re talking yellow and amber alerts for rain, snow, and wind, which is just not ideal for partying.
In Scotland, they’ve got an amber rain warning in the Highlands and Moray until 5 PM, and a yellow warning for snow and rain is in place until midnight. This could really mess up plans for ringing in the New Year.
Outdoor events in Edinburgh, like the famous Hogmanay street party and fireworks, have been canceled. The organizers felt it was best to let everyone know early, especially since many tourists had traveled for the festivities.
One family from India, who came all the way to Edinburgh, expressed their disappointment. They were really looking forward to the celebrations, and now they’re left trying to figure out what to do instead.
Scottish Culture Secretary Angus Robertson said it was the right call to cancel, given the severe weather forecast. He reassured everyone that while the big events are off, there will still be plenty happening in the city, like pubs and clubs staying open.
In Blackpool, the fireworks show is also off due to high winds, but they’re still planning a family party with a projection show on the tower to welcome 2025.
Travel is a mess too. Roads and rail lines in the Highlands are closed due to flooding and landslides. ScotRail has suspended services on some routes because of heavy flooding.
As for the weather, it’s not looking great. The Met Office warns of possible blizzard conditions in northern Scotland, and they’re advising everyone to stay updated on travel conditions.
So, if you’re planning to head out, keep an eye on the weather. It’s going to be a wild start to the new year with more wind and rain expected on January 1.
