Darwin: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently paid tribute to the survivors of Cyclone Tracy, marking 50 years since the disaster struck. He highlighted the incredible resilience of the people in the Northern Territory.
The cyclone hit on Christmas Eve in 1974, with winds reaching up to 217 km/h. It caused massive destruction, taking lives and leaving many without homes. It was a tough time for the community.
During his visit, Albanese acknowledged that this anniversary brings back painful memories for many survivors. He expressed his support and understanding of their struggles.
He toured the Cyclone Tracy exhibition at the local museum, reflecting on how the disaster shaped the city. Albanese emphasized the strength of the Australian spirit, noting how people came together to help each other in the aftermath.
He also reminded everyone about the ongoing risks of natural disasters, urging people to heed warnings, especially with the extreme weather conditions currently affecting parts of Australia.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton joined in the tributes, describing the cyclone’s story as one of “ruin and resurrection.” He praised the efforts of those who helped during the crisis and acknowledged the lasting impact on survivors.
Both leaders recognized the lessons learned from Cyclone Tracy, which led to better building standards and disaster preparedness. Despite the progress, many survivors still carry the trauma of that fateful event.
