Tasmania: Anthony Albanese and three senior ministers are heading to Tasmania on Wednesday. They’re on a mission to snag two important seats from the Coalition.
Joining him are Finance Minister Katy Gallagher, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, and Infrastructure Minister Catherine King. It’s a big deal for Labor.
They’re looking to flip the Bass seat, currently held by rebel Liberal MP Bridget Archer, and Braddon, where Tasmanian senator Anne Urquhart is making a bold move to contest.
Urquhart’s taking a risk here, especially since the current MP, Gavin Pearce, won the last election with a solid swing of 4.9 percent.
In Lyons, they’re hoping former opposition leader Rebecca White can hold onto the seat after the current Labor MP, Brian Mitchell, steps down.
Before the trip, the government shared some data showing how many households and businesses will benefit from a $3 billion upgrade to the NBN. It’s a big cash injection to replace old copper connections.
On Wednesday, Albanese will announce that over 21,000 homes will get access to faster fibre connections, with speeds reaching up to 1 gigabyte per second. That’s a game changer!
He’s also hinted at more announcements about social housing and community services. Albanese is really pushing the message that the government cares about Tasmanians.
He’s been vocal about how the Opposition, led by Peter Dutton, isn’t looking out for Tasmanians’ interests. He claims they’re against cost of living relief and investments in education and health.
Interestingly, the Coalition has said they won’t oppose the $3 billion boost to the NBN, even though Dutton criticized the timing of these upgrades.
