Perth: So, Anthony Albanese is back in Western Australia, and he’s got to defend that live sheep export ban again. It’s a hot topic, especially with the upcoming elections. Farmers are really upset about it.
Before he even got to Perth, David Littleproud, the Nationals leader, was already throwing shade at him. He accused Albanese of ditching farmers by pushing this ban, which is set to kick in by 2028.
This ban is a big deal for WA sheep farmers and exporters. They’ve been pretty vocal about how it’s going to hurt their businesses. Albanese, though, insists that sheep meat exports are actually on the rise, even as live exports drop.
He mentioned that his government is ready to help those affected by the ban, promising over $100 million in support. That’s a hefty package, but farmers are still worried about their futures.
During his visit, Albanese faced questions about a processing facility that shut down after the ban was announced. Littleproud didn’t hold back, saying Albanese is ruining the livelihoods of thousands while pretending to create jobs.
He also called out WA Premier Roger Cook, saying he needs to step up and fight for the farmers. The live export ban was passed earlier this year, but many farmers feel they weren’t properly consulted.
While some say this ban could cost over 3000 jobs, the government is sticking to its guns, claiming their support package will help farmers transition. The ban is officially set to start on May 1, 2028, so there’s still time for things to unfold.
