Melbourne: A gardener’s recent experience has raised some serious concerns. A dad was all set to create a veggie patch for his fiancé’s birthday when he found something alarming in the potting mix he bought. Instead of just soil, he discovered a bunch of plastic and glass mixed in.

He shared with Yahoo News Australia that he wanted to grow organic veggies for his family. But when he started unloading the soil, he was shocked to see so much plastic. After calling the supplier, he was told the soil was recycled and safe, but he wasn’t convinced. As the soil dried, more plastic kept showing up, and he decided it was best to remove it all.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Another gardener, Ryan, mentioned that he faced a similar issue, which inspired him to start a YouTube channel to educate others. He stressed the importance of checking soil in person before buying it in bulk.

Ryan also pointed out that many Aussies unknowingly contribute to this problem by tossing plastic into green waste bins. This waste often ends up being processed into compost and potting mixes, which can lead to more plastic in our gardens.

Dr. Michelle Blewitt from the Australian Microplastic Assessment Project highlighted that microplastics are everywhere, even in our food and bodies. They can have serious health impacts, including links to fertility issues and other diseases.

Ryan encourages everyone to be mindful of their plastic use. He suggests buying from local grocers and even growing your own food, like lettuce, to cut down on plastic waste. It’s a simple way to save money and help the environment.
