London: A new trial is using AI for breast cancer screening. This could lead to more women getting treated faster. Right now, two radiologists check mammogram images for accuracy. The AI could allow one radiologist to do this alone, helping more patients get seen.

Nearly 700,000 women will join this research, according to the government. Those scheduled for routine NHS screenings will be invited to participate in the £11 million Edith trial. AI technology will be added at 30 testing sites across the UK.

Each year, about 55,000 women and 400 men in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer. Dr. Katharine Halliday, president of the Royal College of Radiologists, believes AI could greatly impact radiology. However, she notes that this is a rigorous study and results will take time.

Dr. Halliday also mentioned a projected 40% shortage of consultant radiologists by 2028. This makes it urgent to increase radiology capacity. Claire Rowney, chief executive of Breast Cancer Now, emphasized that any changes to screening must be backed by evidence of safety and effectiveness.

The government is seeking evidence to shape a national cancer plan. This plan aims to improve research, diagnosis, screening, treatment, and prevention. It will also address rarer forms of cancer, including those affecting children.

Professor Peter Johnson, national clinical director for cancer, stated that the NHS is diagnosing more cancers early. This is crucial since early treatment is often more effective. A national cancer plan will help bring in new ideas and ensure the NHS stays at the forefront of cancer innovations.

Peter Kyle, the science and technology secretary, added that catching cancer weeks earlier could be life-saving.
