Sydney: A climate activist is in hot water after he spray painted “liar” on the office of federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek. This happened on December 20, and it was all caught on camera.
Zachary ‘Zach’ Schofield used red spray paint to make his point in Redfern, a suburb in Sydney. The whole thing was filmed by the activist group Rising Tide and quickly spread on social media.
After the incident, Schofield turned himself in to the police. He was pretty vocal about his reasons, saying that while the minister was approving new coal projects, she was misleading the public online.
He felt it was time to call out the government for not standing up to coal and gas companies. Schofield was charged with unlawful entry and damaging property, and he appeared in court briefly, but his case was postponed.
Plibersek condemned the vandalism, saying it was unacceptable. She emphasized that while it’s okay to disagree with the government, it should be done peacefully and respectfully.
Schofield, who remains on bail, is a well-known figure in the activist community. He’s part of Rising Tide, which has organized significant protests, including a blockade at the Port of Newcastle that led to over 100 arrests.
He’s set to return to court next week, and it’ll be interesting to see how this all unfolds.
