Castledawson: A community is heartbroken after a schoolgirl’s tragic death. She entered the Moyola River and didn’t make it.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on Sunday morning. They received a report about a girl in the water. Sadly, she was found outside the village and later died in the hospital.

Denise Johnston, a local councillor, shared that the alarm was raised around 5:20 AM. The girl was in the water for over an hour. The Lough Neagh rescue crew pulled her out just outside Castledawson.

They started CPR immediately and continued until the ambulance arrived. Unfortunately, she had already passed away. She was the only daughter of her family, and they are devastated.

Johnston expressed that it’s a parent’s worst nightmare. The entire community is in shock and mourning for the family.

A PSNI spokesperson confirmed they responded to the report of a female in the water. Officers and emergency services worked together to rescue her. Sadly, she died later at the hospital, but her death is not being treated as suspicious.
