Wright works at New Mexico’s only unionized Starbucks, and they’ve been at it for years. The company hasn’t delivered on promises made earlier this year, which has led to frustration.
This Christmas Eve, they joined a nationwide strike, which union leaders say is the biggest one yet. It’s all about holding Starbucks accountable for their commitments.
Workers across the country are standing up, with other strikes happening at places like Boeing and Amazon. It’s a big moment for organized labor.
Wright, who has worked in food service for 25 years, shared her struggles. Even with benefits, she says it’s tough to make ends meet. “It’s still not a living wage,” she noted.
The strike follows their vote to unionize last September. On Tuesday morning, about a dozen workers showed up to picket, chanting slogans like “No contract, no coffee.”
Naomi Martinez, a volunteer organizer, was thrilled to see the workers united. She praised their commitment and energy, saying it’s inspiring to witness.
Union officials are still negotiating a national contract that meets the needs of different stores. They’ve spent countless hours trying to reach an agreement.
Lynne Fox, president of Starbucks Workers United, emphasized that baristas know their worth and won’t settle for less. They want to be treated as true partners in the company.
Unfortunately, a Starbucks spokesperson wasn’t available for comment. Wright pointed out the pay gap, highlighting that their new CEO makes over $50,000 an hour while they struggle to get by.
