Colchester: A former MP is speaking out about big changes to local councils. Sir Bob Russell says these changes are a huge threat to Colchester’s decision-making. He believes it’s the biggest attack in 836 years. The Labour Government wants to cut Essex councils from 15 to about five.

During a council meeting, Sir Bob shared his worries. He mentioned Colchester could lose around 30 councillors. He said, “Colchester Council wasn’t even threatened during the English Civil War. But now, the Government wants to erase it.”

He also pointed out that the Labour Party promised to give power back to communities. However, he feels the plan for Essex combines Colchester with other areas, which isn’t local. A council covering such a large area isn’t what people want.

David King, the Lib Dem leader, echoed these concerns. He feels the changes seem predetermined. He knows the city council must respond to the proposals. While he’s sad about losing Colchester City Council, he wants to make the best of the situation.
