Abingdon: The company just landed a nice chunk of change—EUR800,000—to help tackle malaria. This funding comes from UK Research & Innovation, which is backed by the government.

They’re part of a bigger initiative with a total of EUR5 million set aside for malaria projects under the Horizon Europe Guarantee scheme. The project kicks off in February and will run for two years.

So, what’s the plan? Abingdon is working on rapid tests to spot plasmodium vivax, the bug that causes malaria. They want these tests to be as effective as lab tests but designed for use in Africa.

They’re aiming to meet the World Health Organisation’s standards for field testing. Once they nail it, the tests will be handed over to diaTROPIX, a Senegalese company, to make more tests locally.

Abingdon is all about supporting African communities, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, with these tests. Chris Yates, the CEO, expressed excitement about the grant and the chance to work with other top institutions.

Other organizations getting funding include the Institut Pasteur and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. It’s a big team effort to fight malaria!
