Plans to transform an abandoned nursery into a convenience store have sparked concerns over safety in Folkestone’s notorious drug area

Folkestone: An old nursery that’s been sitting empty since 2018 is finally getting a makeover. The Precious Times nursery, right next to a sketchy area known as “heroin alley,” is set to become a convenience store.
This area has been a real problem for years, with the nearby underpass littered with needles and trash. It’s been a hot spot for drug activity since at least 2017, and folks are worried about what a new store might bring.
Local council recently gave the green light for the renovations, but many are raising eyebrows. They’re concerned that more people in the area could lead to more trouble, especially with the drug den just a stone’s throw away.
Peter Philips, who helps clean up the area, described it as “hellish.” He mentioned that they find needles every time they go down there, and kids often use the underpass to deal drugs. It’s a mess, and he doesn’t think a convenience store is a good fit.
He pointed out that the underpass is always dirty, and it’s not safe for kids. Just two weeks ago, it was trashed again, even after a recent cleanup. He worries that people might get confused trying to navigate the area, especially with the busy road right there.
Despite the concerns, the plans for the store are moving forward. The building will be revamped with new sliding doors and other upgrades, and it will be called Shalu Mini Mart Ltd. They plan to open from early morning until midnight most days.
Interestingly, the Folkestone Town Council had objections, saying the location isn’t suitable for a shop due to the busy junction and lack of parking. But the council still approved the application, so work can begin soon.
There’s also talk about possibly closing the nearby subway as part of a larger project aimed at improving the area. It’s a mixed bag of news, and many locals are hoping for the best.
