Detroit: So, Aaron Glenn, the Lions’ defensive coordinator, just said “no thanks” to the Patriots when they wanted to interview him. Crazy, right? He’s open to chatting with other teams, but not New England.
Reports say the Patriots reached out to Glenn just after they asked to talk to Lions’ offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. This came right after some folks were calling them out for how they were handling their coaching search. They seemed to be rushing things, especially with Byron Leftwich and Pep Hamilton, who aren’t even with any NFL teams right now.
It looks like the Patriots might be trying to get Mike Vrabel on board quickly. They did follow the Rooney Rule, which is all about interviewing minority candidates. But Glenn’s decision not to interview could make it easier for them to hire Vrabel without raising too many eyebrows.
Still, some people might think the Patriots are just checking boxes instead of genuinely looking for the best candidates. The Rooney Rule says they just need to interview, not that the candidates have to be currently employed. So, technically, they didn’t break any rules.
Plus, interviewing Leftwich and Hamilton could help them get noticed again in the coaching world. It’s all about getting your name out there, right? Sean Payton shared a funny story about how coaches often find out about job openings through word of mouth.
Both Leftwich and Hamilton have solid NFL backgrounds. Leftwich even won a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers, and Hamilton has worked with big names like Andrew Luck and Justin Herbert. If they can turn these interviews into coaching gigs, that’s a win for them.
