As of January 1, there were 297 total homicides, with 243 classified as murders. This is a significant decrease from 2023, which saw 397 homicides and 344 murders.
The decline is a relief after the record-high violence in 2023, showing over a 25% drop in total homicides and nearly 30% in murders. Interestingly, aggravated assaults remained steady, as some are seen as “failed homicides.”
In other news, Shelby County General Sessions Court Judge Bill Anderson announced his retirement effective March 1. He shared this decision in a letter to County Mayor Lee Harris, stating that he and his wife had agreed on this step.

His resignation comes amid political scrutiny regarding his bail decisions, although he didn’t address this in his letter. Anderson has been a judge since 2010 and was re-elected in 2022.
