Murphy became famous in the 70s with the sitcom Man About The House. He played George Roper, a landlord, in this popular show that started in 1973. The show was known for its unique take on relationships, featuring two single women living with a man.

After Man About The House ended in 1976, Murphy starred in the spin-off, George And Mildred, which ran until 1979. He also played Alvin Smedley in Last Of The Summer Wine, another beloved series.

Born on the Isle of Wight, Murphy was part of the Theatre Workshop founded by Joan Littlewood. Before his big breaks, he appeared in shows like The Avengers and Z-Cars. In 1993, he took on a major role in The Invisible Man stage adaptation.

Throughout his career, Murphy appeared in many TV shows, including The Catherine Tate Show and Benidorm. In his later years, he voiced Mr. Lovelybuns in the animated series Claude, based on popular children’s books.

Murphy was married to actress Linda Regan. She expressed her love for him, saying he was her soulmate and she would love him forever.
