Inverness: Can you believe it’s been 60 years since the first folks moved into Raigmore Estate? It all started back in the 1960s when the area was transformed from a stately home into a vibrant community.
Raigmore used to be the site of a grand house owned by the Mackintosh family. They were quite the big deal in Inverness, known for their charitable work and social standing. But after the war, things changed, and the house fell into disrepair.
By the 1960s, there was a real housing crisis in Inverness. The council decided to clear out some old buildings and create a new estate. They approved plans for 322 homes, and construction kicked off. It was a much-needed solution for many families.
When the estate opened, it was a breath of fresh air. The houses were modern, with gardens and green spaces. People who had lived in cramped conditions were thrilled to have a place they could call home.
Raigmore School opened in 1966, adding to the community feel. Kids had a safe place to play and learn, and families began to settle in. It became a tight-knit neighborhood where many residents stayed for life.
Even today, some of the original tenants remember the estate fondly. They talk about how beautiful the flats were and how they enjoyed stunning views. It’s amazing to think that this lively community started on what was once just a garden.
Though the Mackintosh family is no longer around, their legacy lives on in the street names and the spirit of the community. Raigmore Estate has truly become a home for many over the past six decades.
