Five Weather Records Shattered Across Canada in 2024
Canada experienced an unprecedented year in weather, breaking five significant records that highlight extreme conditions across the country.
Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary, St John’s, Nova Scotia, Canada
Toronto: 2024 was a wild year for weather, with records tumbling all over the place. It was like Mother Nature decided to shake things up big time.
First off, Toronto had its wettest year ever, with over 1050 mm of rain. Can you believe that? Almost half of it fell during the craziest summer storms.
On July 16, the city was practically underwater, with floods closing highways and rivers overflowing. It was a real mess!
Montreal also got in on the action, recording its wettest day ever on August 9, thanks to tropical storm Debby. They saw 158 mm of rain that day!
Then, over in western Canada, Edmonton and Calgary had their hottest Julys on record. And Soyuz, B.C. had a crazy 18-day heat streak of 35 degrees. Talk about sizzling!
Meanwhile, St John’s, NL was drenched in June and November, smashing old records with over 200 mm of rain in June and 326 mm in November. Those months were a total washout!
In the Great Lakes region, winter was surprisingly warm, leading to record low ice coverage. By mid-February, only about 3 percent of the lakes were frozen. That’s just wild!
And let’s not forget Nova Scotia, which got hit with a massive snowstorm in early February. Sydney saw its biggest snowfall events on record, with 95 centimeters piling up. That’s a lot of snow!
