George Orwell Honoured on New £2 Coin Celebrating His Legacy
The Royal Mint unveils a £2 coin to honor George Orwell, celebrating his impact on literature and society.
George Orwell, 1984, Animal Farm, Royal Mint, Manchester, UK
Manchester: So, guess what? George Orwell, the guy behind classics like 1984 and Animal Farm, is getting his own £2 coin! How cool is that? The Royal Mint is rolling this out to mark 75 years since he passed away.
The design is pretty neat. It features a camera lens at the center, surrounded by the phrase “Big Brother is watching you.” Plus, there’s another quote on the edge that says, “There was truth and there was untruth.” It’s a nice nod to his work.
Orwell’s 1984 is all about Winston Smith, a guy living under a totalitarian regime where privacy is a thing of the past. The Royal Mint has also honored other literary legends like Shakespeare and Austen, so Orwell fits right in.
Rebecca Morgan from the Royal Mint said it best: Orwell’s work has shaped so many minds, and people are still diving into his books today. It’s great to see his legacy celebrated like this.
Oh, and if you’re a collector, you can snag this coin starting January 15. They’ll have different versions, too, with prices kicking off at £17.50. And if you’re in South Wales, you can even strike your own coin at the Royal Mint Experience starting January 20. How fun is that?
