Mumbai: So, it turns out that 173 officials in Maharashtra who’ve been booked for corruption are still hanging around without being suspended. This info comes straight from the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
Interestingly, the state police is one of the top departments with the most corruption cases against its own officials. And guess what? Most of these unsuspended officials are from the Mumbai area.
As of last December, there were 173 officials from 21 different government departments who hadn’t been suspended yet. Among them, there are 30 Class I officers, 28 Class II, and a whopping 107 Class III officers. The education and sports sectors, along with municipal corporations, are leading the pack for not suspending officials linked to corruption.
When you look at the numbers, it’s clear that most of these unsuspended officials are from Mumbai (47), followed by Thane (38), Aurangabad (21), and a few others. Some of these cases date back to 2012! The ACB also mentioned that 22 government officials booked for corruption are still in their jobs.
Last year alone, the ACB opened 721 corruption cases, which included a lot of entrapments and some cases involving disproportionate assets.
Former ACB Director General Pravin Dixit had some strong words on this. He said that officials who get convicted should be fired right away. He also mentioned that the chief secretary should regularly check in with department heads to see why no action is being taken.
One ACB official, who wanted to stay anonymous, explained that once they catch someone in a corruption act, they pass the details to the relevant department, and it’s up to that department to act on it.
