Middlesbrough: It’s been ten years since The Crown pub shut down, and it doesn’t look like it’s reopening anytime soon.
The pub closed its doors for good in January 2015. Since then, Middlesbrough Council bought it and handed it over to the Middlesbrough Development Corporation. They’re still figuring out how long it’ll take to restore the place.
A review in 2024 raised some eyebrows about how the pub was bought before the elections. People are wondering if it was worth the money. Last December, folks sent in questions to the TVCA Cabinet, and they finally got some answers in January.
One question asked if funds for Gresham included money for The Crown, given its safety issues. The response was a bit vague, saying details would come out in future board papers.
At the last MDC Board meeting in December, they talked about plans for The Crown. They want to turn it into a mixed-use space for business and leisure, linking it to the Gresham area’s revival. They’ve already done a condition survey, which will be part of the bigger Gresham plans.
The Crown used to be a landmark before it closed. It was a beloved cinema before becoming a pub, and many locals have fond memories of it.
In February 2023, the council bought the building for £750,000, which was way more than its £460,000 valuation. An audit later found no solid business case for that price. The former mayor, Andy Preston, said they should’ve bought it years ago for less, but he thinks the price was fair for such a prime spot.
